DULONG, YUNNAN, CHINA - 2004/11/01: A precarious cross between villages in the Dulong Valley. The Dulong received their first contact with the Chinese government in 1960, who came to fix the contended border with Burma. Liberating the Dulong from a Tibetan stronghold, the Chinese also introduced - and built - bridges. Little more than cable wire and rotting planks, it nevertheless revolutionized contact between villages, who although lived almost within shouting distance of each other, were separated by a raging torrent. Before Chinese contact, it would take the Dulong four-days to trek to the nearest village. As part of Beijing's 'Go West' campaign to develop the country's remote minority regions, a vehicle road into the valley was complete 5 years ago, cutting the 92-kilometer journey back to 8 hours.
